In fed-batch fermentations, sterile culture medium is added either continuously or periodically to the inoculated fermentation batch. The volume of the fermenting broth increases with each addition of the medium, and the fermenter is harvested after the batch time (Figure 1 (b)). Fed-batch culture is, in the broadest sense, defined as an operational technique in biotechnological processes where one or more nutrients (substrates) are fed (supplied) to the bioreactor during cultivation and in which the product (s) remain in the bioreactor until the end of the run. Fed-batch fermentation requires feeding equipment in addition to the equipment required for batch fermentation and therefore leads to higher fixed costs (Fig. 1). However, the process can provide improved productivity as a whole because of the enhanced yield and reduced fermentation time.
